If you’re like me, you’re already planning your Valentine’s Day.
If you hate Valentine’s Day, you probably aren’t reading this.
I’ve always been one of those people who enjoy Valentine’s Day—whether I was single or not.
- This year give your sweetheart a dark chocolate “whoopie pie” heart!
We enjoy these little hearts because they are so simple and easy to make!
3 reasons why this recipe is easy-peasy
- You can make them in an hour-ish (even less depending on speed)
- Use store bought mix or a homemade chocolate cake recipe – either one is delicious!
- The whoopie pie filling is made with marshmallow crème.
- You can make your own if you already have marshmallows by melting them down.
One thing I enjoy doing is planning our date nights—which I’ve been told is uncommon? But, it shouldn’t be!
If you want to have a special night, don’t wait around for your significant other to read your mind. You deserve a “date” that you want, and you’ll most likely LOVE it… considering you made the plans, ha-ha.
Serves: 2+ people, 12 hearts
Ingredients
Heart
- Chocolate cake mix – homemade or boxed
- If using boxed, I recommend dark chocolate German cake mix
Filling
- Powdered Sugar – 1 ½ C
- Butter, softened – 6 TBSP
- Marshmallow crème – 1 jar (7 ounce) *I use Kraft Jet-Puffed
- Vanilla Extract – 1 TSP
- Salt – 1/8 TSP
Coating
- Chocolate Melting Wafers, red or pink *I recommend Ghirardelli White Chocolate Melting Wafers – 1 package
ITEMS NEEDED
*Oven
*Heart shape cookie cutter
*Baking Sheets
*Cups: ½, 1
*Teaspoons (TSP): 1/8, 1
*Tablespoons (TBSP): 1
*KitchenAid or Hand Mixer
*Mixing Bowl(s)
*Cooling Rack
*Freezer
*Large Spoon x2
Directions
- Cake: Make cake mix per directions on box. Set aside and let completely cool.
- Filling:
- Beat butter in mixer until creamy.
- Add sugar and salt to the butter mixture. Mix.
- While the mixer is on, add marshmallow crème and vanilla extract. Combine until completely blended. Set aside.
- Once the cake has cooled, use the cookie cutter and cut out hearts. Pair them up together (to make “sandwiches”) and place the filling on one half. Set the other half on top.
- Place them in the freezer for about 30 minutes. You want to make sure they stay solid while you pour the chocolate on.
- Chocolate ganache: melt down the red or pink chocolate melting wafers. *I recommend using Ghirardelli White Chocolate Melting Wafers for the best taste
- Assemble: remove heart whoopie pies from the freezer. Place a cooling baking rack over a baking sheet and set aside.
- Place one in the bowl of melted, one at a time, and use a large spoon to cover the other half of the heart completely.
- Grab another spoon and use the 2 spoons to lift the heart out of the bowl.
- Set onto cooling baking rack set up.
- Once you have covered all the hearts place them in the fridge for at least an hour! If you can wait that long 😉
- OPTIONAL: Write a personalized message with icing on the top of the hearts!
